We all know what it is and we’ve all done it. A nice quick read on msn.com discussing the 5-second rule. You know the old rule that applies when you’re eating something and you accidentally drop it, yell out “5-second rule”, pick it up, and then continue eating it. According to the article, the amount of bacteria transferred from the ground to the food item is essentially the same from 1-second to 5-seconds. Meaning, time is not really relevant and you really can’t claim that the “3-second rule” is more effective/better with dropped food.
This reminds me of the recent Snickers commercial where the dude “sounds the feasting horn” and subsequently drops his Snickers bar. If that was me, I’d brush off the gravel and be on my merry way. I eat almost anything and everything and I really hate seeing food go to waste. If I am hungry enough, or if the food item is just too-good to throw out, I will dust/rinse it off and eat it. I mean, a little bit of dirt never hurt any body. Well, I do draw the line at hair. Hair in food is disgusting. I can handle a bit of sand -hair no way.
