Tech Tip: Vista giving you a Server Execution Failed?

January 30th, 2008 by ron

<rant> I use Microsoft’s latest and greatest OS, Vista Home Premium.  It sucks. A lot.  It is slow, bloated and non-intuitive.  It takes everything you’ve learned from the past few OSes and makes you toss it out the (no pun intended) window!  You have to relearn some of the most basic tasks to do it the “Vista Way”.

If anyone is running Vista, I strongly suggest they install the Service Pack 1 Release Candidate (SP1 RC).  It makes Vista just barely usable.  The most noticeable fix?  It no longer takes hours to copy, move and delete files. </rant>

Now on to my helpful tech tip for the day.  Last night I was trying to use my wireless connection in Vista and the Wireless Manager hung and became frozen for a couple minutes.  I tried to access the Network and Sharing Center and that hung as well.  I also noticed a nice, red X over my network connection icon and received a “Server Execution Failed” error.  After frustratingly clicking around I rebooted a couple times to no avail.  If you are experiencing the same problem, here’s your fix:

1) Run “command prompt” as Administrator (search for it on the Start Menu, right-click on the icon, “Run As Administrator”)

2) Type and press enter:  net localgroup “Administrators” “NT Authority\Local Service” /add

3) Restart computer
