Google’s Android

November 12th, 2007 by ron

android Last week, Google announced ”Android“.  What does it mean?  Based on a few articles, it seems like just a whole lot of hype.  But don’t underestimate the Big G, they’ve got lots of money to throw around.

What is it?  A Linux-based software stack, which includes an operating system, browser interface, middleware and applications to be used on mobile phones.  Basically, they’re giving phonemakers the software to interface with their hardware.  To try an create an analogy, its like Microsoft, giving away WinXP to Dell to customize and load onto their computers to sell.

Why?  Google wants to tap into the billion dollar mobile phone industry which is only going to increase as other countries develop.  Google hopes their Open Handset Alliance and software package will enable handset makers to more easily create innovative and efficient ways of using a mobile phone.  Of course, Google wants lot’s of people to use the software so that it will be easily compatible with some not-yet-announced revenue model (probably AdWords).

When? The first Android-based phones should hit the market in the second half of 2008.

Impact?  It is a big step forward for the Search Giant into the wireless industry.  It’s pretty clear that Google also wants to make a run for the soon-to-be released 700MHz spectrum up for auction by the FCC.  This spectrum could possibly be used for a new wave of mobile phones running Android.  However, handset makers and operators regard Android as just one more of many platforms that they already use.  We’ll see how widespread its adoption becomes in the next year.

Summarizing Quote: “There is no such thing as a single gPhone. What we’re doing is enabling an entire industry to create thousands of gPhones”
